Stop the Silence

Prince George’s County and 2-1-1 Maryland

join in the fight against Domestic Violence

Tim Jansen, Executive Director, Community Crisis Services, Inc. Prince George’s County officials recently partnered with Community Crisis Services, Inc. who answers 2-1-1 for Prince George’s County and surrounding counties. Together they have launched a campaign where victims of domestic violence can call to get confidential help. This initiative is designed to help reduce domestic violence in Prince George’s. “All of this is to try and prevent domestic violence and stop the silence,” County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) said. The campaign brings the state’s attorney’s office, social service agencies, the sheriff’s department and the police department together to focus on reducing domestic violence. One of the largest obstacles in the reduction of domestic violence is that many women keep silent about their abuse. Others don’t know where to turn for help, Baker said. 44 homicides occurred in the county, at the time of the October press conference, and nine were related to domestic violence, said Prince George’s Police Chief Mark Magaw. During the past two years the Sheriff’s Department. responded to 10,000 domestic violence calls, Sheriff Melvin High said. County Officials feel that with the addition of 211, victims will speak up and ask for help and “stop the silence.”
